Hola from back in Salamanca!
So, today I woke up and I instantly knew that my prediction of sore legs came true. I hobbled down the stairs to the free breakfast, which frankly was amazing, because they were like 10 different types of meat and 15 different types of pastries. We then all loaded ourselves onto the bus and took the short ride through the fog to the Santander Lighthouse. There were horses next to the lighthouse and there was a baby that was only a couple of days of old. So cute!
After only about 10 minutes, we got back on the bus to go to Santillana del Mar. I am sure it’s a beautiful city when it’s sunny out, but unfortunately I did not get to view it in all its glory because it was absolutely pouring rain.
We walked from the bus down the main street, where cars aren’t allowed and we got a “surprise.” Our ISA director bought us incredibly fresh milk and a little cake-like dessert. It was amazing especially because no one drinks cold, plain milk here and I’ve been going through withdrawals. And then we walked around and I found out we were only 15km from some very cool petroglyphs but would not be looking at them. Sad face.
Back onto the bus for a short ride to the small town of Comillas for lunch and sightseeing. There was this really poor guy who made a fortune trading to the new land of America, so he came back to Comillas and built a fancy mansion. The king of the time really loved Comillas but there was nowhere for him to stay there so the poor turned rich guy lent the king his mansion. The king then made the guy a noble. What luck! If only we could all rise so far in life. Comillas is also one of the few places outside of Barcelona that has a building designed by GaudÃ. I took tons of pictures. They also had a little fair going on and they were selling tons of local food and products. People were dressed up in traditional garb and dancing on a stage. I ate lunch there. I got a bun with a piece of chorizo baked into the middle for only 1.5 euro and a pastry with nuts in the middle for one euro. And then again we were off on the 4.5 hour long bus ride back to Salamanca. And now I’m back and have tons of homework!!! Wish me luck!
